Mylopotamos is a landrace cannabis growing area on the northern slopes of Psiloritis in Rethymno on Crete, Greece, drawn on the municipalities of Mylopotamos and Anogeia. A police operation found cannabis plants at the village of Zoniana in 1998. Police reported cannabis plots in the two municipalities in 2017 and in each year from 2020 to 2026.
Reports of cultivation
A police operation in 1998 found 500 cannabis plants growing in the sewage-treatment tank of Zoniana, a village on the northern side of Psiloritis.[1][2] Reviewing Rethymno drug cases in November 2007, the Athens daily Ta Nea also listed a plot of 1,500 plants and a field of 800 in the Mylopotamos area. In 2001 police uprooted 1,950 plants at Vlychada near Bali, on the coast of the same municipality.[1]
On 5 November 2007 a police convoy heading for Zoniana to search for hashish was fired on outside the village and three officers were wounded.[3][2] Ta Nea reported the next day that no crop was standing so late in the year, but that the season's hashish harvest was large and hidden in and around Zoniana; police officers told the paper that growers had been disturbed less that summer than in earlier years.[2] A search of the village two days after the shooting found 58 cannabis plants.[4]
In September 2017 police, helped by a police helicopter, found three plots in farming areas of Mylopotamos and uprooted 1,097 plants.[5] In June 2020 an operation, again with the helicopter, found seven plots in mountain and forest land of Mylopotamos municipality and one in Anogeia municipality, carefully tended in prepared ground and holding 1,272 plants up to 1.5 m tall.[6] In April 2021 police uprooted 748 plants up to 70 cm tall in one part of the municipality.[7] In August 2021 two men were arrested entering a mountain plot of 119 plants; Protothema opened its report by saying that the hashish plots discovered every so often in the wider Mylopotamos area had no end.[8]
In September 2022 an operation at Zoniana and in the mountains round it seized 80 plants up to 4 m tall from houses and stock pens; four more plots in the municipality held 100 plants.[9] In July 2025 a search of the mountains of Mylopotamos found 19 plots with 147 plants up to 2 m tall.[10] At the end of July 2026 a plot of 32 plants was found in the same mountains, with 2.61 kg of cannabis hidden nearby.[11] In early October 2026 police found 71 plants about 1.5 m tall, close to harvest, on a plot of farmland in the municipality, with nine sacks holding 36.57 kg of cannabis; two men at the plot were arrested.[12]
Anogeia
Anogeia, a separate municipality on the same northern slopes, had one of the eight plots found in June 2020.[6] Police uprooted 20 plants from a plot on its farmland in July 2023,[13] and 24 and 10 plants in two finds in July 2024.[14] On 4 August 2026 a search of the mountains of the Rethymno, Anogeia and Mylopotamos municipalities found 17 plots with 143 plants up to 3 m tall.[15]
