The Krasnoyarsk Krai growing region covers the south of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, between the Angara and the Minusinsk Basin: the island forest-steppes round Achinsk, Krasnoyarsk and Kansk, the Krasnoyarsk part of the Chulym–Yenisei basin and the southern taiga between them.[1] Wild hemp grows on the krai's farmland in many districts of its farming zone every year. The federal agricultural inspectorate found it on 1.6 thousand hectares in 2024, on 1,182 hectares in 2025 and on 741 hectares in 2026; in 2025 and 2026 the largest areas lay in the west of the krai.[2][3][4]
Geography
Between the taiga and the island forest-steppes to its south lies a belt of mixed and small-leaved forest, the southern subtaiga. The island forest-steppes of Achinsk, Krasnoyarsk and Kansk give way southwards to the steppes of the Minusinsk basin. The forest-steppes have rolling plains and hills with fertile grey forest soils, chernozems and chestnut soils. The krai's main arable land lies in the Minusinsk basin and the island forest-steppes, and spring wheat, its main grain crop, is sown mainly south of the valley of the Angara; in 1971 the krai had 3.96 million hectares of ploughland.[1] The Achinsk forest-steppe in the west covers 5,000 km², the Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe, mostly on the left bank of the Yenisei north of the city, 5,400 km², and the Kansk forest-steppe in the east, between the foothills of the Eastern Sayan and the Yenisei Ridge, 17,000 km².[5]: 53–54 The Chulym–Yenisei basin, the northern part of the Minusinsk depression, lies between the spurs of the Eastern Sayan and the Kuznetsk Alatau, north of the Batenev ridge.[6]
The region takes in the districts and town okrugs of the krai south of the Angara, outside the Minusinsk basin, as they were before their merger into larger okrugs. It covers about 171,900 km².
Hemp as a crop
Settlers who came to the Yenisei governorate in the second half of the 19th and the early 20th century brought new farm tools, crop varieties and trades, among them the pressing of flax and hemp oil.[7]: 38 The hemp collection of the Vavilov Institute holds a local hemp variety from Krasnoyarsk, catalogue number 114, which the institute grew for evaluation at its stations in the north-west of Russia.[8]
Wild and weedy hemp
The krai office of the federal agricultural inspectorate, Rosselkhoznadzor, has found large areas of wild hemp on farmland every year since 2008. From May to October 2014 its inspectors, partly with the drug police, found 347 large patches covering more than 2,066 hectares; the largest lay on land left unworked or long out of farm use, and on municipal land not let to anyone it found 1,170 hectares. Hemp was destroyed on 1,734 hectares by herbicide, ploughing and mowing.[9] Wild hemp prefers fertile soil and grows on farmland in patches or among other weeds; on fields left unused and overgrown it can come to dominate the weed cover and form large patches.[2][10]
In 2017 the inspectorate found 1,440 hectares on 190 plots, with the largest areas in Berezovsky (343 hectares), Emelyanovsky (287.6) and Sukhobuzimsky (208.9) districts round Krasnoyarsk, followed by Achinsky (151.5) and Nazarovsky (110).[11] In the first half of summer 2025 it found 602 hectares on fallow fields in Sharypovsky District, 232 in Nazarovsky, 183 in Achinsky and 100 in Bogotolsky, and 61.9 hectares on unused plots in Kansky, Rybinsky and Dzerzhinsky districts in the east.[10] In June 2026 it found hemp growing in crops on 468 hectares in Sharypovsky okrug, 165.3 in Achinsky and 100 in Bogotolsky.[12] In Sharypovsky okrug one firm's rape fields were overgrown with wild hemp and other weeds on more than 460 hectares, which the inspectorate found with a drone and the firm later cleared.[4] Over the 2026 season the inspectorate also found hemp in Balakhtinsko-Novoselovsky, Emelyanovsky and Bolshemurtinsko-Sukhobuzimsky okrugs.[13]
In July 2021 the police found more than 2 hectares of hemp near the village of Sukhaya in Emelyanovsky District, and the plants were cut and destroyed with a grader. In Nazarovsky District they found 1.3 hectares on land owned by a rural settlement and ordered the settlement's head to destroy it, and the plants were mown.[14] In early July 2026 the Krasnoyarsk city police checked 153 landholders and found 39 patches of hemp covering 2,510 m² inside the city.[15]
Hemp is frequent across all three island forest-steppes and was recorded in every local flora studied there except Taina, in the Kansk forest-steppe. It grows along roads, by fences round houses and farms, on fallow land and waste ground, and in places it forms thickets.[5]: 247–248 A survey of weeds in 2014–2018 in the forest-steppe of Emelyanovsky and Sukhobuzimsky districts and in the taiga districts to the north found weedy hemp, Cannabis ruderalis, among the weeds found in every district surveyed and regularly present in crops.[16]
