Kanai 5203 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected between Tongsa Bridge and Tongsa, now Trongsa, in central Bhutan, on 16 April 1967 by the third botanical expedition of the University of Tokyo to the eastern Himalaya. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E00128892.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The typed label is headed Herbarium Universitatis Tokyoensis and The Third Botanical Expedition to Eastern Himalaya 1967. Under Patria it gives Bhutan and a stretch of route, Tongsa Bridge (1700) == Tongsa(2000), after a struck-out Tashiling(2100). The date is April 16 1967.[3] A route sketch pasted above the label, dated Apr. 14 - 20, marks Neylong, Tashiling, Tongsa and Tongsa Bridge on a profile between 2,000 and 2,500 metres, with the Uto La Road beyond.[3] The catalogue gives no locality and dates the gathering to 14 April 1967.[1]
The coordinate is the town of Trongsa as OpenStreetMap places it, the named end of the stretch at 2,000 metres.[4] It stands for that end of the route, not for the plant.
Collectors
The label names the collectors as H. Kanai, G. Murata, H. Ohashi, O. Tanaka and T. Yamazaki, after the name of H. Hara, which is struck through.[3] The catalogue lists Hiroshi Hara first, followed by Gen Murata, Hiroyoshi Ohashi, Hiroo Kanai, Osamu Tanaka and Takasi Yamazaki.[1] The collector number, 5203, is written on the label by hand.
Specimen and identification
The label's name is typed Cannabis sativa L.; its Determinavit field is blank, and the catalogue determines the sheet the same way.[1] The sheet holds a whole plant with long roots. Edinburgh publishes the sheet image under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence.[3]
