Hewer 1411 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Kamdesh, in the province its label calls Konar, Afghanistan, at about 1,126 metres on 8 June 1969 by Professor T. F. Hewer. The label calls the plant one of the commonest weeds of the place. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E00405508.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries two handwritten labels headed Ex Herberio Kewensi. The fuller one reads Afghanistan : Konar Province, Kamdesh, One of the commonest 'weeds' grows everywhere. and alt. c.1126 m., with the printed Coll. Prof. T. F. Hewer No. completed as 1411. 8.6.1969. The second repeats the name, the province, the number and the date.[3] The catalogue gives the locality as Afghanistan:Konar:Kamdesh and the date as 8 June 1969, and has no habitat or altitude.[1] Kamdesh is today in Nuristan Province.
Specimen and identification
The labels name the plant Cannabis sativa L. A revision slip of the Natural History Museum, Vienna, printed for Flora Iranica, redetermines the sheet in Karl Heinz Rechinger's name in 1977: subsp. indica (Lam.) Small + Cronquist.[3] The catalogue keeps Cannabis sativa L.[1] The heading Ex Herberio Kewensi marks the sheet as one that came from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
