EBC 43437 is an accession of hemp, Cannabis sativa, from Japan. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds it in its Economic Botany Collection as EBC 43437.[1] Kew records its donor as the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910, which gave it with four more samples of hemp from Japan.
The catalogue entry
The catalogue gives the artefact name and the parts held as Hemp, the plant name as 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa, the country and the geography description as Japan, the storage as Bottles, boxes etc, the entry book number as 145.1910, the donor as Japan British Exhib and the donor date as 00/00/1910, the year 1910 alone. The notes read Label source: Verified in lab 11.iv.11. The catalogue leaves the use, collector, collector's number, donor number and collection date blank.[1]
Kew assigns entry book numbers to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition, in a series that runs each year, so 145.1910 places the sample's arrival at Kew in 1910.[2] The same entry number and donor are recorded for four more samples from Japan: EBC 43423 and EBC 43456, catalogued as Hemp, and EBC 43440 and EBC 43462, catalogued as Hemp fibre.[3][4][5][6] Entry 146.1910, from the same donor, is a sample of hemp fibre from Korea, EBC 43439 (by 1910).[7] Kew also publishes the entry to GBIF, with the locality Japan.[8]
