EBC 43419 is an accession of hemp from northern Taiwan, catalogued as Hemp used for making bags (Not clothes). The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds it in its Economic Botany Collection as EBC 43419.[1] It was entered at Kew in 1882 with two more hemp samples from North Formosa, inner bark and thread, given by the British consul at Tamsui, T. Watters.
The catalogue entry
The catalogue gives the artefact name and the parts held as Hemp used for making bags (Not clothes), the plant name as 153.04 CANNABACEAE with no genus, the use as MATERIALS - Fibres with the user Man, the geography description as North Formosa, the storage as Bottles, boxes etc, the entry book number as 139.1882 and the donor as Tamsui HM Consul, with the donor note Watters T. The country is Not defined. The catalogue leaves the collector, collector's number, donor number, donor date and collection date blank.[1]
Kew assigns entry book numbers to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition, in a series that runs each year, so 139.1882 places the sample's arrival at Kew in 1882.[2] The same entry number is given for the inner bark of hemp, EBC 43435, donor Watters T,[3] and for the hemp thread, EBC 43469, donor Watters T, HM Consul.[4]
Specimen and identification
Kew determines the sample to the hemp family, Cannabaceae, with no genus; GBIF gives the same rank.[1][5] The two other samples of the entry are determined to Cannabis.[3][4] No image of the sample is published.
