Dukerley s.n., Bône is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected in Algeria by a Dr Dukerley. Its label states cultivation and leaves the year unfinished, so no collection date is asserted. Meise Botanic Garden holds the sheet as catalogue BR0000023200425.[1] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 2243247911.[2]
Collection and locality
The handwritten label at the foot of the sheet is in one hand in brown ink. It reads Cannabis sativa L., then cult. Bon followed by a long horizontal stroke, then Algérie. at the right and below that coll. Dr Dukerley, at the left against 18 and a full stop at the right.[3] The century is written and the year is not, so the sheet dates from the nineteenth century and no closer.[3]
The abbreviation cult. states cultivation. The place is written Bon and then broken off. Isidore Dukerley's own published work places his cannabis observations at Bône, now Annaba: a note he sent to the Société botanique de France in 1866 opens with an expert examination he had conducted at Bône at the end of July 1865.[4]
The catalogue carries none of this. Its locality is recorded as S.L., for sine loco, its date as S.D., for sine dato and its collector as Dukerley E.[1][2] The country is coded as Algeria.[1]
Custody
A slip at the head of the sheet reads Herbier L. de Bullemont.[3] A printed curatorial label records the Bullemont collection and names Dukerley and G.L. Durando among the botanists whose material reached it; Durando s.n., Sig (1850) is a sheet by the second of them.[3] The same label states that the collection was transferred from Leuven to Meise in 1999. A violet stamp beneath it reads Universitas Lovaniensis, Herbarium Instituti Carnoy.[3]
Specimen and identification
Three pieces are mounted: a leafy shoot with a dense terminal head, a bare slender stem and a stem with its root attached.[3] The head is pistillate. Its bracts are packed in tight clusters, several hold rounded pale achenes and dried stigmas curl out between them.[3] The leaflets are narrow and sharply serrate.
The catalogue records the name as Cannabis sativa L. and the preparation as a herbarium sheet.[1] A printed label at the lower left reads Population dynamics in Cannabaceae, Leaf tissue removed for DNA, Christopher J. Grassa (ECON) - 2018/07/02, Harvard University Herbaria.[3]
The kif variety
Dukerley's 1866 note described the cannabis grown in Algeria under the names kif and tekrouri and set out how its seed and its pistillate plants differ from ordinary hemp. He leaned towards treating it as a form of the same species and not a separate one.[4] Three years later Alphonse de Candolle took up that account in the Prodromus, where the variety kif is defined as the plant cultivated in Algeria under the name Kif or Tekrouri and the reader is referred to Dukerley for the full description.[5] That name, Cannabis sativa var. kif A.DC., is the one under which Brichi s.n., Alger (1909) is filed at Brno.[6]
