De Graer 700 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected at Mbunga, in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was then the Belgian Congo, in August 1936 by the missionary botanist A.M. De Graer. Meise Botanic Garden holds the sheet as catalogue BR0000014662775.[1] GBIF publishes the gathering as preserved specimen occurrence 1839971962.[2] Its printed Flore congolaise label is the fullest of the Congolese cannabis sheets at Meise, recording a local name, a habit, a habitat and a statement about smoking that no catalogue field carries.[3]
Collection and locality
The label is a printed Flore congolaise form headed Herbier P. A. M. De Graer, O. P., the initials of the Dominican order, numbered 700. It gives the place of collection as Mbunga and the date as August 1936.[3]
Specimen and identification
The label describes the plant as a shrub 1.70 m tall, growing in brousse or bush, with whitish green flowers.[3] The sheet is annotated with the symbol for a male plant, so the mounted material is staminate.[3] The determination on the accompanying Brussels slip is Cannabis sativa L.[3][1]
Recorded local name and use
The label gives the local name as Mauzeliba, attributed to the Bamemeli, and under usage indigène De Graer wrote that it is a kind of hemp smoked locally, that people nevertheless prefer to smoke another species called Boko, and that Mauzeliba gives them violent headaches.[3]
The note documents a distinction between two smoked plants, with cannabis the less preferred because of its reported aftereffects. The sheet does not identify Boko.
