Codd 8506 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at the Prinshof Experiment Station, Pretoria, in Gauteng, South Africa, on 1 April 1954 by L. E. Codd. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle holds the sheet as P06829797.[1] Sheets are also at the Meise Botanic Garden and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center. The label calls the plant Dagga.
The label
The Paris sheet carries a printed National Herbarium, Pretoria distribution card. It gives the province as Transvaal and the district as Pretoria, then reads Cannabis sativa Linn with the female sign, and "Dagga" cultivated on Prinshof Experiment station. Pretoria. Erect 6 ft. high. Woody at base. Branching freely. Flowers green. It is signed L. E. Codd, dated 1/4/54 and numbered 8506.[1]
The number comes from the label
The Paris catalogue records no collector's number for this sheet at all. The number 8506 is read from the card, and it is confirmed by the Meise and Naturalis sheets, which both carry it in their catalogues.[1]
Three sheets
The Meise Botanic Garden holds BR0000014662621, with the verbatim date 01/04/1954 and the locality Transvaal. Dist. On Prinshof Experment Station. Pretoria, the misspelling the catalogue's own. The Naturalis Biodiversity Center holds L.1592570, whose fragment packet is annotated LEC 8506. Both publish images under free licences.[1]
Specimen and identification
All three catalogues file the sheet as Cannabis sativa L. The label marks the plant female, which pairs it with Codd 8505, the male, gathered at the same station four weeks earlier.[1]
