Boivin 1107 is a herbarium accession of cultivated Cannabis sativa gathered by L. H. Boivin on the Île Bourbon, today Réunion, in 1848. Its field slip records that the plant was cultivé par les noirs (cultivated by the Black people) at a place called La Source. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds two sheets of the number, P06780607 and P06780609.[1][2][3]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries three labels. Boivin's small field slip reads Cannabis, cultivé par les noirs. (cultivated by the Black people), La source and the number 1107. The museum's printed label reads Ile Bourbon., M. Boivin. 1848. and No. 1107., with the genus and the word Culti (cultivated) written in by hand.[4] The catalogue gives the year 1848, the locality Ile Bourbon, la source and the note Culti.[2] For the second sheet it gives Voyage de M. Boivin/1107, no locality and a span of years from 1847 to 1852.[3] The label names the growers only by that term.
Specimen and identification
The sheet holds two tall, leafy stems with flowers.[4] A slip of 1981 determines the plant as Cannabis sativa L., signed W. Marais, and the catalogue files both sheets under that name. The catalogue records that leaf tissue was taken from P06780607 in March 2021 for C. J. Grassa of Harvard University.[4][2]
