Watt 9393 is an accession record for a pressed herbarium specimen of Cannabis sativa collected at Mashobra near Shimla, in what is now Himachal Pradesh, India, on 19 August 1888 by George Watt. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the gathering on two sheets, catalogue E00248817 and catalogue E00248612.[1] GBIF publishes them as separate records, occurrence 574981820 and occurrence 575244122, though both carry the same collector, number and date and are one gathering.[2] Neither catalogue entry carries a locality; the place and date are written on the sheet itself.[3]
Collection and locality
E00248817 is annotated in manuscript Cannabis sativa, L. / Mashobra, Simla. / Aug. 19. 1888.[3] The second sheet carries only the printed field tag Field No. 9393, Herb. G. Watt., so the determination and the locality for the gathering rest on the first.[3]
No altitude is recorded, although Mashobra stands above 2,000 m, and the label gives no habitat and no indication of whether the plant was cultivated.
Specimen and identification
Watt determined the sheet himself as Cannabis sativa L., writing the name above the locality.[3] The catalogue carries the same determination.[1]
