Volk 1068 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on ditch edges and in wet fields at Khost, Afghanistan, at 1,170 metres by Otto Heinrich Volk, and dated 1 August 1950. A note in Vienna's catalogue says that at Khost the herb was smoked as bang and its seed, bang-doma, taken as an aphrodisiac. The Natural History Museum, Vienna holds the sheet as W 1970-0008012.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The label, in Vienna's transcription, reads Afghanistan, Khost, 1170 m, with the habitat Grabenränder, nasse Äcker (ditch edges, wet fields), the date 1 August 1950 and the collector's number 1068.[1]
Recorded local name and use
The catalogue carries a note in German: Kraut wird als "bang" geraucht. "bang-doma" = Same, als Aphrodisiacum, that is, the herb is smoked as bang; bang-doma is the seed, used as an aphrodisiac.[1]
Specimen and identification
Volk's own determination was Cannabis indica. Ernest Small redetermined the plant Cannabis sativa in 1974 and subsp. indica in 1975, Karl Heinz Rechinger confirmed the second in 1976, and the sheet is filed under subsp. indica.[1] The catalogue notes that leaf tissue was removed from the sheet for DNA analysis for C. F. Grassa in 2018.[1]
Sequenced duplicate
Another sheet of the same gathering, at the Munich herbarium (M) as 288779, was sampled for DNA by Christopher J. Grassa's herbarium-genomics project at Harvard University. The sample is published as BioSample SAMEA112688157, a staminate plant collected by OH Volk under number 1068 on 1 August 1950 at Paktia Province, Khost.[3]
