Evidentiary scope
The label gives a regional locality, a collection interval and the identification. It records no habitat, cultivation status, local name or use. The accession is classified as Other. It does not establish a continuing population, a feral population, a landrace or a living germplasm holding. No conservation priority is assigned.
Georeferencing
The label places the gathering within eight miles of Srinagar, in what it calls the drained lake basin of Kashmir. Srinagar is in the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir; sovereignty over the wider Kashmir region is disputed. The country and province fields follow the present-day administration, as the GBIF country code does.
A circle of eight miles around Srinagar may take in parts of neighbouring districts, so no district is given. The label describes an area, not a point. It leaves the height blank. Editorial treatment
GBIF and the RBGE catalogue give John Ball as collector. The Ball slip records the herbarium the sheet came from and its presentation in 1891, while the printed label is that of the Schlagintweit herbarium. The collector field follows Schlagintweit 4927 (1856) in giving the surname only, because the sheet does not say which member of the family made the gathering.
The date is stored at year precision because the label's interval runs across August and September. GBIF's 10 August 1856 is the first day of that interval.
The number 4366 is the herbarium's general catalogue number (Gen. No. of Catalogue); a pencilled 2 stands before the printed words. A Melbourne sheet, MEL 2413180A, carries the same locality text with the interval 2–20 October 1856 in GBIF. It is a different interval and is not treated as part of this gathering.
