Why the appellation is on the map
- Forsyth (1871, p. 14): the mission of 1870 passed through fields of wheat, wild oats, hemp and maize at Sanju. The word is "hemp", without saying whether for fibre or resin.
- Henderson and Hume (1873, p. 108): Indian hemp among the crops being harvested at Sanju in 1870. This is the same visit as Forsyth's, by another member of the party.
- Bellew (1875, pp. 221–222): hemp grown at Sanju "for its resin, which is a staple export to India". Bellew was there with the embassy of 1873–74, which was at Sanju on 1 November 1873 (Forsyth, ed., 1875, p. 67).
Growing status
The status is Historical, grown 1870–1873: those are the years of the two visits that saw hemp in Sanju's fields. Hu, Zhang and Hao (2015) name Pishan County among the main producing counties of máyān at present, but they name counties only, not Sanju. No source read describes cannabis at Sanju after 1873, and none says that growing there ended.
Where it is
- Bellew puts Sanju on the Sarighyar river where it comes out onto the plain; Forsyth describes it as a green ravine of hamlets, gardens and groves reached out of the desert.
- The town of Sangzhu (桑株镇) is listed among the towns of Pishan County by the county government. Its Uyghur name in OpenStreetMap is سانجۇ (Sanju). The page takes the Sanju of the sources and today's Sangzhu to be one place.
- The coordinates are the OpenStreetMap point for Sangzhu town (node 8867383163).
The map
The appellation has no border of its own: no outline of Sangzhu town is available, and none is drawn from points. The map shows its point. The settlement lies inside the Khotan border, in the oasis of Pishan County.
Sources
- Forsyth (1871), Henderson and Hume (1873), Forsyth (ed., 1875) and Bellew (1875): the scans on Wikimedia Commons; the pages cited were read on the page images.
- Pishan County government (2026): the list of the county's towns and townships, read in full.
Sources not used
- The route notes in Forsyth (ed., 1875, p. 450) say hemp was "very little grown" in the province of Khotan. They concern the province as a whole; for Sanju the page uses Bellew's account from the same embassy.
