Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels of both sheets place the plant in the Aga steppe in July 1931, По скалам оз. Ножёй, в изобилии. (on the rocks of Lake Nozhey, in abundance), and the collector adds (По-моему, совершенно дико) (in my opinion quite wild). They give no use. Wild is Nazarov's opinion, stated as such, not an observation of how the population came there. The plant grew on rocks, outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the labels; they do not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3791 × 5438 pixels). The second sheet is MW0062823 (3786 × 5397 pixels). The two labels are the same text in the same hand; the page states only what the readings agree.
- By hand, above the stamp. φ 50°50′ λ 114°48′ от Гринв.
- Boxed stamp. М. И. НАЗАРОВЪ. / Растенія … printed губерніи (struck through) / Соб. Опред.
- By hand. ю.-в. Забайкалья / Cannabis ruderalis D. Janisch / 31/VII 31 (after the printed 19) / Бурято-Монголия, Агинская степь. По скалам оз. Ножёй, в изобилии. / (По-моему, совершенно дико). / № 14.088. / М. Назаров.
- Readings. The lake was read Ножей and Ножёй; the diaeresis is clear on MW0062823. The author after the name was read D. Janisch and D. Jantsch on MW0062821, D. Janisch on MW0062823.
- The stamped numbers 119789 (MW0062821) and 119798 (MW0062823) near the barcodes are registration numbers of the herbarium, not field numbers.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
The point 50.8333, 114.8 is the position Nazarov wrote on both labels, φ 50°50′ λ 114°48′ от Гринв. (latitude 50°50′, longitude 114°48′ from Greenwich); the herbarium's database publishes the same point. It lies 20 m from the shore of Lake Nozhiy (OpenStreetMap way 112836485, written Ножий; the only lake of the name found in the region), which agrees with the label's on the rocks of the lake, in the Aginsky district of Zabaykalsky Krai. The label states its position to the minute, about 1.9 km of latitude and 1.2 km of longitude. SRTM gives 663 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: collection point from label. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
Two sheets, one accession. The sheets share the collector, the number, the day, the place and the words of the label. MW0062821 is the infobox image and the first catalogue entry; both are shown under Sheets.
Wild. Nazarov's по-моему, совершенно дико (in my opinion quite wild) is reported as his opinion. The accession is classified Other: the label gives no ground for Feral (no fallow or field), and a single gathering does not establish a wild population either.
Lake. The page writes the lake as OpenStreetMap does, Nozhiy (Ножий), the only lake of the name found in the area; the label writes Ножёй.
Place in 1931. The label's Бурято-Монголия is the Buryat-Mongol ASSR of the time; the Aga steppe lies today in Zabaykalsky Krai, which the province field takes.
Collector. The collector and determiner fields take the catalogue's M. I. Nazarov, the label's М. И. Назаров, as on Nazarov 13038 (1930). No source read for this page gives his full name, which is not linked.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue's locality for MW0062823 reads По склонам (on the slopes); its label, like MW0062821's, reads По скалам (on the rocks).
- The catalogue spells the lake Ножий for MW0062821 and Ножёй for MW0062823.
