Page scope
The page treats maziren wan, the cannabis-seed pill of the Shanghan lun, with its later copies in the Zhenglei bencao and the Bencao gangmu and its modern use. Other pills named after the seed (damaren wan, xiaomaren wan, the Tang qixuan maren wan) are different formulas.

Sources
- The Shanghan lun in the Song edition of Lin Yi, as transcribed on Chinese Wikisource (clause 247 in the transcription's numbering, chapter 8 of juan 5), gives the six drugs, their weights and the dose. The transcription marks its formulas as not yet proofread.
- Cheng Wuji's annotated text (Siku quanshu edition, juan 5) has the same six drugs and weights under the name maren wan, and calls it piyue wan in the note. It agrees with the Song edition on every weight.
- The Zhenglei bencao (Siku quanshu, juan 24) and the Bencao gangmu (Siku quanshu, juan 22) copy the formula as Zhang Zhongjing's with one jin each of rhubarb and bitter orange. In the Shanghan lun the bitter orange is half a jin.
- Brand and Zhao (2017) give the date, the modern clinical standing and the Taiwan insurance figures for 2003.
- The two clinical papers (Zhong et al. 2019; Yang et al. 2021) are cited for the results their abstracts report.
Is it cannabis?
- The drug is 麻子仁, the seed of 大麻. Brand and Zhao identify the seed in this formula as the achene of Cannabis sativa (huomaren, Cannabis Fructus). The Zhenglei bencao says that Zhang Zhongjing's pill uses the seed of 大麻.
- 胡麻 (huma) is sesame, not cannabis; Li Shizhen's entry on 大麻 draws the distinction (see China). The formula's drug is 麻子仁.
Title
- Maziren wan is the pinyin of 麻子仁丸 without tones, as on the China page (mázǐrén wán). The clinical papers write MaZiRenWan and Brand and Zhao Ma Zi Ren Wan; both are redirects, with Maren wan and Piyue wan (Cheng Wuji) and the Chinese characters.
Kind and plant part
- Traditional medicine. Seed.
- Still made: yes. The 2019 trial and the 2003 Taiwan prescription figures show it in use.
- The Japanese kampō form of the pill is not on the page: the sources cited do not cover it.
