Why the area is on the map
- Addi and colleagues (2022), from fieldwork in eastern Xiaoliangshan (Ninglang County) in 2019–2021: cannabis is among the plants "cultivated by the Yi people for a very long time".
- Rock 10802 (1923–1924), eastern slopes of the Likiang Snow Range: the Berkeley duplicate is catalogued as cultivated for fibre for horse ropes.
- Rock (1947): Cannabis sativa "much cultivated" by the Naxi at Ta-ku; hemp among the crops of Mba-yi-wda; the Lisu of Ba-ssu-ko, in Yung-ning, weave their skirts from the fibre of the female plant.
- Zhang and colleagues (2016), from fieldwork at Wenhai, Ludian and Shihong: hemp seed used for oil and eaten as a snack in times of drought.
- Li and colleagues (2021), from work with Naxi healers in 2019: hemp, sa, used as medicine and as a condiment, recorded as cultivated and wild.
Growing status
The status is Active: Addi and colleagues write in the present perfect, from fieldwork of 2019–2021, that the Yi have cultivated cannabis for a very long time. Li and colleagues class hemp as cultivated and wild among the plants of Naxi healers in 2019. The licensing of industrial hemp in Lijiang (2010–2014) is not what puts the area on the map.
How the border is drawn
- The border follows Lijiang, a prefecture-level city of Yunnan (Gucheng District and Yulong, Yongsheng, Huaping and Ninglang counties), as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 2729779, read 21 October 2026).
- Ground above 4,000 m and land that ESA WorldCover 2021 maps as bare or sparsely vegetated, as snow and ice, or as open water is left out at the outer edge of the border only: land of those kinds that the kept ground encloses is inside, pieces less than 5 km apart are joined, and pieces under 25 km² with no accession in them are left out. About 20,520 km² of the 20,530 km² of the units are inside the line. The Yulong Snow Mountain, which kept valleys surround, is inside, as are Chenghai Lake and the Yunnan half of Lugu Lake. Along stretches of the outline that no neighbouring border runs beside, the line is simplified to about 3 km of detail.
- Check points inside the border: Lijiang, Ninglang, Yongsheng, Huaping, the collecting point of Rock 10802. Outside it: Dali, Shangri-La, Panzhihua.
- Where this border meets Yunnan, Dêqên, Nujiang or Liangshan, the two share one line.
- Land cover: ESA WorldCover 2021 (version 200, 10 m), © ESA WorldCover project 2021 / Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2021) processed by ESA WorldCover consortium, licensed CC BY 4.0. Elevation: AWS Terrain Tiles (Terrarium, SRTM-based), zoom 10.
The name
The page takes the name of the city, Lijiang (丽江); Rock's label spells it Likiang.
Neighbouring areas
Dêqên, to the north-west, and Nujiang, to the west, are also growing areas of the Yunnan region.
Accessions inside the border
Rock 10802 (1923–1924) is filed under the area and the region: the catalogue of its Berkeley duplicate says the plant was cultivated.
Sources
- Addi and colleagues (2022): open access. Their statement on cannabis is about the Yi in general and cites earlier work; it is given as theirs.
- Rock 10802: the Edinburgh sheet and the Berkeley catalogue entry.
- Rock (1947), The Ancient Na-khi Kingdom of Southwest China: the passages on Ta-ku, Mba-yi-wda and Ba-ssu-ko print no year of observation. Rock names the plant as Cannabis sativa.
- Zhang and colleagues (2016): the methods date the fieldwork 2011 to 2013, the abstract 2012 to 2013. The article gives the methods' dates.
- Li and colleagues (2021): the healers worked in Gucheng District and Yulong County.
