Discussion
Identifier
The accession identifier is KHA-AFG-BAL-0120180001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Holder segment
KHAstands for Khalifa Genetics. - Province segment
BALis for Balkh Province, as on the Real Seed Company's Balkhi accessions. - Year 2018 is the collection year the company states: "Landrace Genetics, central Asian landrace expert, personally aquired the seeds in the Balkh Province near the city of Balkh in 2018". It is the seller's account and is attributed to it in the article.
- Month 01 is the placeholder used when no month is given.
- Sequence 0001. KHA-AFG-BAL-0120180002, the company's Afghan Lemon, is a selection from this line and takes the next number.
Sourcing
Khalifa Genetics' own product page (https://khalifagenetics.com/product/balkh-hashplant/), read live on 12 October 2026 and in Wayback Machine captures of 22 September 2020 (the earliest) and 24 June 2024 (the latest, whose description matches the live page). The collection sentence is the same in all three. The page's own data gives a publication date of 17 April 2020.
ACE Seeds' English listing (https://www.aceseeds.org/en/seeds/balkh-regular-seeds/), read live on 12 October 2026. ACE Seeds stocks the line and its listing reproduces much of Khalifa Genetics' text. Its specification table (Type and Genetics rows, flowering times, bouquet) is ACE's own and is cited to ACE.
Every statement about the line is the company's account of its stock and is attributed to it. No farmer, village or collection site is named.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace. The company writes: "Landrace Genetics, central Asian landrace expert, personally aquired the seeds in the Balkh Province near the city of Balkh in 2018." It says that farmers there have grown the line for centuries to make hashish. That places the source of the seed with growers near Balkh. The seed on sale is a reproduction kept by open pollination, which the company says keeps much of the line's diversity, so it is not treated as an inbred line. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the company's account, which names no farmer or village. The account has not been checked against other sources. An earlier version of this note classified the line as Other, on the ground that a vendor listing does not establish the class of the source population.
- Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. The chain of custody from the source population to the seed on sale is the company's account and no other source records it.
- Accession type is left empty. The company says that it has been adapting the line since 2018 and ACE labels the seed P4, but no source names a parent collection that is documented here, so the page is not typed Reproduction.
- Collection date: 2018, the company's stated year. The collector, Landrace Genetics, is named in the article and not entered in the infobox: the field links a page and no page about Landrace Genetics is planned.
- Cultivation status: Unknown. The company's page offered seed on 12 October 2026 (marked in stock). That says nothing about whether the source population is still grown.
- Traits. The flowering times and aroma are ACE's figures; the effects are the company's.
Figures as written
ACE: "9-11 weeks" indoors, entered as 9 and 11. The earliest capture of the company's page (2020) says that the longer-flowering plants "require 10 to 11 weeks to flower"; the live page drops the figure, and ACE's English page still carries the older sentence.
Other lots of the line
The Real Seed Company's Balkhi listing said that its 2018 stock was personally sourced by Landrace Genetics in Balkh: the same sourcing name, place and year (see RSC-AFG-BAL-0120180001). No source says that the two companies' seed is one lot, so neither page names the other as its parent or as the same population.
Photographs
The 3 photographs on this page come from the image gallery of Khalifa Genetics' own listing for the line, as it stood on 12 October 2026, and were retrieved from the Wayback Machine's copies of the same files; each file page gives the source file and the capture. The gallery holds 4 photographs; the other one is not used here. The listing carries no captions and credits no photographer. The captions here describe only what each photograph shows. The listing gives no date, place or grower for any photograph, so the pictures illustrate the line as the seller presents it and are not collection documentation. They are used under a fair-use rationale.
Georeferencing
The point 36.76, 66.90 is the town of Balkh, OpenStreetMap node 312726837 (place=town). The listing says that the seed was acquired in the province "near the city of Balkh", not in it, so the uncertainty takes in the town and the country around it. The middle of Balkh District (relation 6572350, 512 km²) lies about 6 km to the north of the point. The Real Seed Company's Balkhi accessions carry the same point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.
Conservation priority
Not rated. The listing gives nothing about the size or status of a source population.
