Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The labels give the place and the date. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557901, 1,026 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. Ho.1626 / Date 30/6/1931 / Locality Peitaiho, Hopeh (the last letter smudged; read once as Hopen) / Collector Hopkinson.
  • Herbarium label (HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa Linn. / Hopeh: Peitaiho June 30, 1931 / Leg. K.S.Hao (1926). Det. W.Y.Hsia.
  • Tag in pencil: 1626. HOPEI province stamp; Hg Cl2; stamped number 421644.

The two readings agree on every line.

  • Yangling sheet (WUK0001286), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0001286, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed Flora of China form: Field No. Ho. 1626 / Date 30/6/1931 / Locality Peitaiho, Hopeh / Collector Hopkinson. Label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Cannabis sativa Linn. / Hopeh: Peitaiho / June 30, 1931 / Leg. K.S.Hao (1926). Det. W.Y.Hsia. A tag tied to the stem, blank on the side shown. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree.

Georeferencing

The point 39.82, 119.48 is Wikidata's point for Beidaihe (Q814657, which carries the alias Peitaiho), as on Hsia 1923 (1930); OpenStreetMap's place node for Beidaihe District (node 6416740305) lies about 1 km to the east. It stands for the seaside town the label names, not for a collection site in it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Collector and title. The two labels disagree. The field form and the tag, written at the time, give the collector Hopkinson and the number Ho.1626; the herbarium label, typed later, gives K.S.Hao and 1926. The page follows the field form and the tag, which agree on 1626: the collector field takes Hopkinson, and the title Hopkinson 1626. No source on a collector Hopkinson in Hopei in 1931 was found. K. S. Hao's own forms of 1930 and 1932 write his numbers Hao 827 and Hao.3544 (Hao 827 (1930), Hao 3544 (1932)); the herbarium label may have read Ho. as Hao, but nothing on the sheet settles it.

Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Yangling sheets carry the same form and the same label, with the same disagreement between them over the collector and the number. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue names the collector K. S. Hao, following the herbarium label; the field form names Hopkinson.
  • The herbarium label gives the number 1926; the field form and the tag read 1626, which the catalogue also gives.
  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet, like the Beijing one, under K. S. Hao, with the number 1926.
  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0001286 also as record be20e16e); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.
