Discussion
Why the area is mapped
- Gezer (2016, p. 80) writes that villagers of Ereğli kaza in the vilayet of Konya planted 1,300 dönüm with esrar under the name of kendir and opposed its being gathered and burned. One source naming the kaza is enough to map the area.
Growing status
- The status is Historical: the only source for growing here concerns the 1880s, and none says when it ended.
- No first or last year is set. Gezer's text gives no year for the planting. He cites two files of the Council of State, ŞD 290/44 of 21 Muharrem 1299 and ŞD 1178/13 of 21 Receb 1302; by the tabular Islamic calendar these fall in December 1881 and May 1885. They date the documents, not the sowing, so neither year is used as a growing year.
How the border is drawn
- The border is Ereğli district of Konya Province in OpenStreetMap (administrative relation 1250945), simplified, about 2,300 km². The modern district stands in for the Ottoman kaza; no source names a village.
- The map point (37.51, 34.05) is Ereğli town.
Sources
- Gezer (2016) was read in chapter 4 (pp. 79–92) in full and the rest scanned. The Council of State files he cites were not seen.
- The proposal of a Hungarian hemp company in 1912 (Akpınar and Nizamoğlu 2019, p. 1229) concerns fibre hemp; that source does not say that any was grown on the land proposed, and the article gives it as a proposal.
- Zhukovsky's types of 1925 are known here only through Clarke (2023), who cites Zhukovsky (1951) and Taşlıgil and Şahin. They are given at the scale of Konya Province.
