Evidentiary scope

The Madras Herb label gives the habitat or locality as Neelgherry Hills (the Nilgiri Hills), names H. F. Cleghorn as collector and records the year 1859. No altitude or ecological observation is entered. The label supplies no habitat, cultivation status, local name or use, so nothing shows whether the plant was cultivated, grew wild or had escaped. The accession is classified Unknown. It shows no continuing population, no feral population, no landrace and no living germplasm holding. No conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

The label's Neelgherry Hills is the Nilgiri Hills. The point 11.46, 76.64 is the middle of The Nilgiris District, OpenStreetMap relation 448985, about 2,548 km², which lies mainly within the hills (English Wikipedia, Nilgiris district); the middle falls inside the district. It is an area point for the hills, not the place the plant was gathered. The hills' outer slopes run beyond the district into Kerala and Karnataka, and the label does not say on which part of them the plant grew. An earlier version of this note gave no point because the hills extend across several districts. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 29 km.

Editorial treatment

The physical sheet carries two distinct collections. Barcode E00248824 and the right-hand label identify Cleghorn's 1859 Nilgiri Hills specimen; barcode E00248823 and the left-hand label belong to a different gathering of 1852, labelled Northern Division and now the accession Elliot s.n., Northern Division (1852). The article distinguishes them so the shared sheet image is not read as one mixed gathering.

Until 17 September 2026 both pages called the 1852 collection a Northern Circars gathering. The label reads Hab. Northern Division; the reading of that as the Northern Circars, from Walter Elliot's commissionership, is set out on Talk:Elliot s.n., Northern Division (1852).
