Why Beni Boufrah is a growing area

  • Bellakhdar (2013, p. 136) names the lands of the Beni Boufrah among those onto which cannabis growing spread out of Senhaja country in the 1980s, where it had until then covered only small areas.
  • The national survey of 2004 (UNODC and the agency for the northern provinces) measured cannabis yields on plots at Bni Boufrah and Bni Gmil (p. 56).
  • Ten genebank lots of INRA Maroc, collected in September 2021, fall inside the border: four in the commune of Bni Gmil, two each in Bni Gmil Maksouline, Senada and Bni Boufrah.
  • The status is Active, from the 2004 survey and the 2021 lots.

Extent and border

  • No source gives the limits of the Beni Boufrah country. The map border is approximate: it is the Cercle de Bni Boufrah, about 560 km², which holds the rural communes of Bni Boufrah, Senada, Bni Gmil and Bni Gmil Maksouline. The circle carries the tribe's name and holds every lot.
  • The circle also takes in the Bni Gmil and Mestassa caïdat. The sources name Bni Gmil separately, so the area may reach beyond the Beni Boufrah tribe's own lands.
  • Where the border meets Ketama, Targuist and Ghomara it follows their lines. To the east it runs beside the commune of Rouadi, which is in no growing area. The area figure in the infobox is rounded from the border.

Sources

  • The Geography section is a stub: the sources describe no terrain for the circle.
  • Zarkt 3 (Imachehouden) carries the name of the commune of Zarkat, in the Targuist area, but its published point lies in Bni Gmil, and it is placed here by the point.
