Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The form gives the number, a regional name and the date. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (TIE 00004157, 1,000 × 1,659 pixels).

  • Form (printed HERBIER, by hand): 7363 / Famille Urticaceae / Nom scientifique Cannabis sativa L., with Recog. and a name beginning J. Ko in pencil, cut by the image edge / vulgaire struck through / Station Chahar-gobi / Date 11.VI.24. A second number above the form, read as 1437.
  • Barcode TJNHM HERBARIUM (TIE); a faint pencilled 158.7 at the foot of the form, read in one reading only.

The readings agree, except on the station's first word: one reads Chahar and allows Chahan; the other reads Chahar and allows Chahan or Chaban.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Chahar-gobi was not found as a place name: no 察哈尔戈壁 or 查干戈壁 was found in OpenStreetMap. In 1924 Chahar was the Chahar Special Administrative Region, created in 1913 (English Wikipedia), and the station names a part of it, not a place within it. Read as Chahan, the first word would be another name altogether. The form names no province, and the province field is left empty.

Editorial treatment

Title. No collector is named, so the title takes Anon. and the number written on the form, with the year of its date.

Collector. The sheet names no collector, and the collector field is left empty. The same printed Herbier form, numbered in one series, carries Tianjin's sheets of Licent 231 (1914) and Licent 886 (1914) and the sheet of Wang 10415 (1933), whose form names J. B. Wang: the series holds gatherings by more than one collector, so the number does not name one.

Province. The catalogue gives Inner Mongolia, which the form does not name: Chahar was a region of the 1920s, not a province of today, and the province field is left empty.

Determination. The recogniser's name is cut off after J. Ko, and the identified-by field is left empty; the other forms of the series with a recogniser give J. Kozlov.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium places the sheet in Inner Mongolia; the form names Chahar-gobi and no province.
