Identifier
The accession identifier is AFP-SWZ-UNK-0120090001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Holder segment
AFPstands for Afropips. - Country segment
SWZ, the ISO code for Eswatini, and province segmentUNK. See "Georeferencing" below. - Year 2009 is the year of the earliest dated document found that lists the line: the menu of the business's website, archived on 13 April 2009, whose pure African section has a page called "SWAZI RED" (http://www.afropips.moonfruit.com/pureafricans/4511419431). The Swazi Red page itself was never archived. No source gives a collection year. The year is a lower bound and moves if an earlier listing is found.
- Month 01 is the placeholder used when the year comes from first attestation.
- Sequence 0001. It is the only accession of the business for this country, province segment and year.
Sourcing
The business's own pages, read from Wayback Machine captures: the menu and the Power Malawi page of 13 April 2009. Its description of the line on SeedFinder (https://seedfinder.eu/en/strain-info/swazi-red/afropips-seeds) was read on 12 October 2026; the opening post of the Overgrow thread "Swazi Red (Afropips)" of 12 February 2023 quotes the same description word for word. Every statement about the line's origin, plants, aroma and effect is the business's own account of its stock and is attributed to it. The breeder it credits is not named.
Royal Swazi
In July and August 2004 the business's site had a page headed "ROYAL SWAZI" whose only text was "Ready to Release Soon." (http://afropips.moonfruit.com/royalswazi). It offered no seed and described no plant, and no later page uses the name. Nothing ties it to Swazi Red, so it is not the source of this identifier's year and has no accession.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace. The business's description credits the line to "Swazi roolbaard from the top swazi breeder in nkomati region of swaziland": a breeder in the Nkomati region of what is now Eswatini. That places the source of the line with a local breeder there; the description does not say how the business obtained the seed. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the business's account, which names neither the breeder nor a farm. The account has not been checked against other sources. "pure african landrace sativa" remains the business's label and is attributed in the article. An earlier version of this note classified the line as Other, on the ground that a seller's account does not establish the class of the source population.
- Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. The description credits a breeder in Eswatini but gives no chain of custody from a source population to the seed on sale.
- Accession type is left empty: the description calls the line the work of a breeder, and does not say whether the seed on sale was that breeder's seed or the business's reproduction of it.
- Cultivation status: Unknown. The business's shop was still online in June 2012 (see Afropips); the Overgrow member Roms reported growing seed of the line in 2011 and later generations from it.
- Traits. The aroma and effects in the infobox are the business's own descriptions.
Figures as written
The business's description gives no flowering time. The figure of about 90 days shown above it on SeedFinder is the database's own estimate and is not entered. Roms gives 12 to 14 weeks for one type of plant in the line and 14 to 16 weeks for the other; these are one grower's figures for seed reproduced from 2011 and are not entered either.
Later growers
The Overgrow thread "Swazi Red (Afropips)" (https://overgrow.com/t/swazi-red-afropips/102661/1) was opened by Roms, who reported preserving the line in 2011 with eight female plants and one male, and growing an F5 generation by 2022 with help from another grower's F3. These are growers' seed runs, not the business's stock. Roms's line, sold by ATAO Genetics, has its own accession, ATA-SWZ-UNK-0120090001, which names this page as its parent. An earlier version of this note said that these runs had no accessions here.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The description places the breeder in the "nkomati region of swaziland", and no unit of that name resolves. In OpenStreetMap, searches for "Nkomati" and "Komati" in Eswatini return only a viewpoint, Nkomati Viewpoint (node 2522316177), in Hhohho, the Komati River (ways 433925961 and 418127035), which crosses Hhohho and runs on into South Africa and Mozambique, and a residential road in Manzini. No boundary, settlement or region of that name was found, so the place the description names cannot be bounded.
Conservation priority
Not rated. The listing gives nothing about the size or status of a source population.
