Squire's extract is the extract of Indian hemp made in London by the pharmacist Peter Squire from drug that W. B. O'Shaughnessy brought from India. Squire's own Companion to the British Pharmacopoeia (1880) says: "We are indebted to Dr. O'Shaughnessy for the first introduction of Indian Hemp into this country. He brought over a quantity from India, which the Author converted into extract for him, and distributed amongst a large number of the profession under Dr. O'Shaughnessy's directions."[1]: 80

The historian Martin Booth, quoted by Kenzi Riboulet-Zemouli and Josep Allué Creus, dates the visit to 1842 and has O'Shaughnessy give "some hashish" to Squire, "who owned a chemist's shop in Oxford Street", asking him to make a medicinal extract from it; Squire "patented it as Squire's Extract and put it on the market as an analgesic". Riboulet-Zemouli and Allué Creus found no evidence that it was sold in Spain.[2]

Squire's Companion gives the extract of the pharmacopoeia as one part of Indian hemp to five of rectified spirit, macerated for seven days, the tincture pressed out and the spirit distilled off, and notes that six parts of hemp yield one of extract.[1]: 81
