Si Songkhram is a landrace cannabis growing area in and around Si Songkhram District, Nakhon Phanom Province, Thailand, in the Northeastern Thailand growing region. Five of its six accessions come from villages within about 33 km of one another in the north of the province, between 145 and 151 m. After Thailand allowed the medical use of cannabis, a subdistrict hospital in the district held the first growing licence in the province.[1]
Geography
The five villages are Tha Kham Hai, Tha Bo, Nong Sarai, Don Toei and Don Haet. OpenStreetMap places them in Si Songkhram District and in the neighbouring districts of Na Thom, Na Wa and Tha Uthen. The sixth accession is a population kept by farmers in several villages of Si Songkhram District.
The lower reach of the Songkhram River, 92 kilometres from its mouth at Ban Chaiyaburi in Tha Uthen district up to Ban Pak Yam in tambon Sam Phong, Si Songkhram district, became Thailand's 15th Ramsar site with effect from 15 May 2019. The site covers the river channel and the seasonally flooded forest along both banks.[2]
Cultivation
All six accessions are landrace general populations, each named for its village or its grower. They come from fields still in use, sown from July to September and harvested from December or January to March, grown in rotation for recreation, medicine and food, and made into ganja. The plants flower in 20 to 24 weeks and stand 2 to 3 m tall. The local name is กัญชา. Éloïse collected four of the accessions on 26 April 2024, on the ISAN01 expedition, and Isabella two on 23 February 2024, on ISAN02.
The subdistrict health-promoting hospital at Ban Lao in Si Songkhram district held the first licence to grow cannabis in Nakhon Phanom. In June 2021 its produce went on sale with that of a community enterprise at a shop for cannabis and hemp products opened by Nakhon Phanom Hospital.[1] Jirawat Rungsri, president of the Medicinal Herbs Community Enterprise of Na Kham in Si Songkhram district, said in 2022 that he had founded the group in 2020 with the Tambon Na Kham health-promoting hospital, to grow cannabis for medical use, and that its 30 members had begun with about 30,000 plants. He said that prices had fallen sharply once the government let anyone grow the plant.[3]
On 10 March 2021 an event at Nong Khaen Chang, tambon Na Kham, prepared the opening of what Thairath called Nakhon Phanom's first community cannabis market, under the title Si Songkhram, Mahanakhon haeng Kancha ("Si Songkhram, great city of cannabis"). Supachai Phosu, second deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and a member of parliament for Nakhon Phanom, said that every subdistrict health-promoting hospital was to have a greenhouse for medical cannabis and an agreement with at least one community enterprise. He said that shop and restaurant owners from Bangkok, other provinces and Nakhon Phanom had signed agreements at the event to buy cannabis leaf in quantity.[4]
