Sato 8108 is a herbarium accession of a female plant of Cannabis sativa collected at Lüshun (旅順, Port Arthur), in the Kwantung Leased Territory (関東州), now part of Dalian, Liaoning, China, on 9 July 1936 by J. Sato. The Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenyang holds the sheet as IFP 03802001x0003[1].
Collection and locality
The sheet carries the printed slip of a private herbarium, Herbarium Junpei Sato., completed by hand. It gives the number 8108, the name Cannabis sativa Linnaeus, the Japanese name アサ (asa, hemp) with 雌株 (female plant), the locality 関東州 旅順 (Kwantung, Lüshun), the date July. 9. 1936 and the collector J. Sato.[2] The catalogue gives the collector, the number 8107, the year and Liaoning.[1] The same collector's slip numbered 8107, for a male plant from the same place on the same day, is on a sheet in Beijing: Sato 8107 (1936).
Beside the slip the sheet carries a typed distribution label of the herbarium of the Institute of Botany, National Academy of Peiping, for another gathering: S. T. Wang's no. 234, from Peiping, dated 16 August 1935 (Wang 234 (1935)). Nothing on the sheet ties that label to the plant, and the page does not take it as this sheet's label.[2]
Specimen and identification
The sheet, photographed upside down, carries a long leafy branch with narrow, serrate leaflets, dense clusters of female flowers in the leaf axils and a paper packet at its tip. A determination slip names the plant Cannabis sativa L. and 大麻; the determiner's name was not read with confidence.[2] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
