Rechinger 32428 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected between Chigha Sarai and Kandai, in eastern Afghanistan, on 16 July 1965 by Karl Heinz Rechinger. Chigha Sarai is today's Asadabad, in Kunar Province. The Natural History Museum, Vienna holds the sheet as W 1970-0008005.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The label, in Vienna's transcription, reads E-Afghanistan, Prov. Nangarhar, inter Chigha Sarai, 34°52'N, 71°10'E, et Kandai, 34°55'N, 70°47'E, that is, between Chigha Sarai and Kandai, each given with its coordinates, in the province of Nangarhar. It gives the date 16 July 1965 and the collector's number 32428.[1] Both places lie in today's Kunar Province: Chagha Serai is a former name of Asadabad, the provincial seat, and Kanday, the seat of a district in the Pech valley, lies within about four kilometres of the label's Kandai point.[3][4]
Specimen and identification
Ernest Small determined the plant Cannabis sativa in 1974 and subsp. indica in 1975, Rechinger confirmed the second in 1976, and the sheet is filed under subsp. indica.[1] The catalogue notes that leaf tissue was removed from the sheet for DNA analysis for C. F. Grassa in 2018.[1]
