Iranian General Population 2019 is a landrace cannabis accession collected in 2019 in the Khorasan region of Iran, listed as Iranian in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC describes it as a high-yielding domesticated strain with immense bud production.[1] RSC sold seed of the collection itself until May 2022 and has sold an open-pollinated reproduction of it, 2019 RSC Iranian Reproduction, since August 2022.[2][3]
Geography
RSC places the landrace in the Khorasan region of northeastern Iran, which borders Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, and gives a latitude of about 35° N.[1] It calls Khorasan an ancient centre of cannabis culture.[1]
History
RSC writes that Khorasan is the site of the khanqah of Qutb ad-Dīn Haydar, a Muslim mystic whom legend credits with discovering hashish. According to RSC, he is best known in the West as Sheikh Haydar, and his followers, the Haydaris, were famed for extreme practices and chronic cannabis use.[1] RSC considers that traditional Iranian landraces show characteristics like those of the Hindu Kush and the Near East.[1]
Collection Details
The listing gives the sourcing as Kushman, Khorasan, Iran (2019). It states that the line was sourced through a long-term resident of Khorasan with deep knowledge of the area, and that the seeds came direct from local farmers.[1] An RSC blog post of October 2019 announcing its first Iranian accession credits it to the work of Kushman, who, the post says, has many years of experience and connections throughout the region.[4] The listing's first archived versions, of October and November 2019, gave the sourcing as personally collected at source in Khorasan.[5]
The seed RSC sells under this listing is now a reproduction of the collection, described at 2019 RSC Iranian Reproduction.[1] The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[6] gives the sourcing as The Real Seed Company, Khorasan, Iran, 2019 harvest.[7]
Cultivation Details
RSC gives the purposes as charas (sieved resin) and bhang, and the harvest as mid-September to October. It lists outdoor, greenhouse or indoor growing.[1] Kwik Seeds files the line under Auto & Semi-Auto, a category for autoflowering and semi-autoflowering strains.[8]
Botanical Characteristics
RSC and Kwik Seeds give a height of 2 to 4 metres and call the line high-yielding.[1][7] Versions of the RSC listing from August 2020 to May 2024 classified it as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica × C. sativa subsp. indica var. indica.[9][10] RSC files the line under CBD, a category it describes as high-CBD cannabis landraces.[11]
Aroma
RSC and Kwik Seeds describe the aroma as "Afghanesque".[1][7]
