Congolese is a landrace cannabis accession listed as Congolese in the seed catalogue of The Real Seed Company (RSC).[1] RSC lists it as an African landrace and heirloom that has undergone several generations of selective breeding in Spain.[1]

Geography

RSC gives a latitude of about 4° S. The Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, on the shop RSC calls its other site,[2] says the landrace was collected in equatorial Africa.[3] Earlier versions of RSC's own listing said the same.[4][5] Both listings add that the name "Congo" seems to have been applied to most African imports in 1990s Spain, so there is strong uncertainty about the line's exact origin within Africa.[1][3]

History

RSC believes the line has not been crossed with Northern Lights or other modern hybrids, as most other seed-bank offerings of Congolese accessions have been.[1]

Collection Details

Both listings give the sourcing as "Genebank, via collector". Neither names a collection site, collector or grower.[1][3]

Cultivation Details

RSC reports that selective breeding in Spain has made the line well suited to indoor growing. It lists outdoor, greenhouse or indoor cultivation.[1] It reports good tolerance of heat and humidity and good nutrient tolerance, though it notes that limited feeding is necessary. According to RSC, plants stretch six to eight times in flower.[1] It gives a flowering time of 90 to 120 days and an outdoor height of over 2 metres.[1]

Botanical Characteristics

RSC describes lime-green foliage and an architecture close to that of classic Thai Sativa types, with some plants of Christmas-tree form. It describes long internodes with quite dense buds.[1] Versions of the listing from 2020 to March 2026 classified the line as C. sativa subsp. indica var. indica.[5][6] RSC reports that limited intersex traits, in under 5 per cent of plants, are usual.[1] It gives the purpose as ganja (bud).[1]

Aroma

RSC describes classic ganja aromas of chocolate, coffee, incense and leather, with some variants fruitier and sweeter.[1]

Effects

RSC describes a long-lasting, euphoric high with a social and creative character that turns calming and anti-anxiety towards its close.[1]

Notes

RSC describes the listing's photograph as a staged colonial-era shot of Congolese men smoking ganja (liamba). It comments that even the better and more sympathetic Western colonial accounts of subsp. indica show some of the racialised paternalism the photograph demonstrates.[1]
