Podlech 12748 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on a roadside in loess steppe 5 kilometres west of Keshem, on the road to Taluqan in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, on 23 September 1965 by Dieter Podlech. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E00405509.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The typed label, headed Staatsherbarium München and Pflanzen aus Nordost-Afghanistan, reads Prov. Badakhshan: 5 km westlich von Keshem an der Straße nach Taluqan, Lößsteppe, an Wegrändern, that is, 5 kilometres west of Keshem on the road to Taluqan, loess steppe, on roadsides, with the date 23.9.1965 and the number 12748.[3] The catalogue gives the same locality and date.[1] Two days later Podlech collected Podlech 12731 (1965) at Baharak.
Specimen and identification
The Munich label names the plant Cannabis ruderalis Janiszewski.[3] A revision slip of the Natural History Museum, Vienna, printed for Flora Iranica, redetermines the sheet in Karl Heinz Rechinger's name in 1977: Cannabis sativa L. subsp. indica (Lam.) Small + Cronquist.[3] The catalogue gives Cannabis sativa L.[1] Edinburgh publishes the sheet image under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence.[3]
Sequenced duplicates
The Edinburgh sheet is a duplicate distributed from Munich. Two other sheets of the same gathering were sampled for DNA by Christopher J. Grassa's herbarium-genomics project at Harvard University: one at the Geneva herbarium (G 023960), published as BioSample SAMEA112689252,[4] and one at the Munich herbarium (M 288809), published as BioSample SAMEA112688192.[5] Both samples give Podlech's number 12748 and the date 23 September 1965. The Edinburgh sheet itself has not been sampled.
