Neubauer 294 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Sombar near Matun, in the Khost district of Afghanistan, on 12 August 1949 by Hans Franz Neubauer. The Natural History Museum, Vienna holds the sheet as W 1970-0008015.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The label, in Vienna's transcription, reads Afghanistan, Sombar bei Matun, Khostgebiet, that is, Sombar near Matun, in the Khost area, with the date 12 August 1949 and the collector's number 294.[1] Matun is an older name of Khost, the town and district in today's Khost Province.
Specimen and identification
Neubauer's own determination was Cannabis sativa. Ernest Small redetermined the plant subsp. indica in 1975, Karl Heinz Rechinger confirmed it in 1976, and the sheet is filed under that name.[1] The catalogue notes that leaf tissue was removed from the sheet for DNA analysis for C. F. Grassa in 2018.[1]
