Moruga is a cannabis growing area in the forests round Moruga, on the south coast of Trinidad. Since 2020 the police have reported destroying cannabis fields there several times, in the La Lune Forest[1][2] and at Marac, in the Moruga Forest Reserve.[3]

Geography

Moruga is a village midway along Trinidad's south coast, in the region of Princes Town; the Trinity Hills rise to the east of it. The area takes in the forested land round the village, including the La Lune Forest and the Moruga Forest Reserve.

Fields reported since 2000

In 1999 the US State Department reported that cannabis was cultivated year-round in the forests of northern, eastern and southern Trinidad.[4] In Moruga the press reports give these finds:

  • September 2020, La Lune Forest: three fields spread across four lots of land, with 25,000 fully grown trees, two seedling beds of 500 and 250 kilograms of cured marijuana, according to a police statement.[1]
  • February 2024, La Lune Forest: two fields on about three lots of land, with about 1,600 fully grown trees and several seedlings.[5]
  • January 2026, Marac, in the Moruga Forest Reserve: seven fields spanning about eleven lots of land, with an estimated 16,100 fully grown plants, a seedling bed of about 1,500 seedlings and a campsite.[3]
  • July 2026, La Lune Forest: two fields covering about one and a half acres, with about 5,000 fully grown trees. The police also dismantled water containers and cultivation equipment.[2]
