Messenia is a landrace cannabis growing area in the south-west Peloponnese of Greece, drawn on the regional unit of Messenia. In 2019 police in Messenia uprooted 2,515 cannabis plants, most of them on Taygetos.[1]
Reports of cultivation
Law 2107/1920 banned the growing, trade and use of hashish in Greece. It kept a provision of the 1906 tax law that directed fines to public works in the growing districts, which the historian Kostis Gkotsinas describes as a concession to the farmers of Arcadia, Argolida or Messenia.[2]: 373
The drug squad of the Kalamata police uprooted and seized 2,515 plants in Messenia in 2019. Most of the plantations, and the largest, were on Taygetos; in the two years before, most had been found in Triphylia. From 2017 to 2019 the squad seized more than 10,500 plants.[1]
Seed lots
The Real Seed Company sells Kalamata Red, a line whose seed, by the company's account, came from Delicorganic and was collected from a farming family near Kalamata in 2004. The company writes that the family had grown the line in their village for more than 30 years until cultivation there ceased under enforcement pressure, and that the village is now abandoned. The company considers the origin of the line unverified, with the wider Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean its likely source.[3]
