Kulyasov 183 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa sent in 1895 by A. Kulyasov, teacher at the Karaabinsk Russian-Kirghiz school in the Ural uezd of the Ural Oblast, in today's Kazakhstan. His label gives the plant's local name, киндер шагыр (kinder shagyr), and says that it grew in weedy places everywhere in a wild state. The Moscow University Herbarium holds the sheet as MW0818721.[1]
Collection and locality
The first label is stamped in type 1895. Уральск. обл. и у., Караабинская русско-киргизская школа. А. Кулясов. учит. (1895. Ural Oblast and uezd, Karaabinsk Russian-Kirghiz school. A. Kulyasov, teacher). The second, written by hand in the spelling of before 1918, reads № 183. Конопля. „киндер шагыр" (кирг.). Растетъ на сорныхъ мѣстахъ повсюду въ дикомъ состояніи. (No. 183. Hemp. Kinder shagyr (Kirghiz). Grows in weedy places everywhere in a wild state).[2] The catalogue gives the collector and the year, with neither the school nor the number.[1]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries two stems: a leafy top with large palmate leaves, and a flowering stem.[2] The label names the plant in Russian, Конопля (hemp), and gives its local name, marked as Kirghiz. A typed slip gives the redetermination of the sheet by E. Small of Canada Agriculture in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L., the name under which the catalogue files it.[2][1]
