Johnston 508 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Mooi River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on 13 February 1901 by H. H. Johnston. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E01459339.[1][2] It is the male plant of a pair; Johnston 877 is the female, and each label points at the other.
The label
The sheet is stamped HERBARIUM OF COL. H. H. JOHNSTON. The handwritten label reads 508 / Cannabis sativa, Linn. followed by the male sign, then Same as no 877. (Urticaceae) (fide J. M. Wood.) and Mooi River, Natal, 13.2.01. H. H. J. A pencilled ORD 153 sits at the lower left.[2]
The cross-reference to Medley Wood
The phrase fide J. M. Wood attributes the identification of this gathering with number 877 to John Medley Wood, curator of the Natal Herbarium at Durban. The family is given as Urticaceae, where cannabis was then placed.[2]
