Hedge W 9486 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at a field's edge between Yawarzan and Qeshm, in the province of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, at about 1,200 metres on 5 July 1969 by Ian Charleson Hedge and Per Wendelbo. The label records the plant as common in the area. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as E00405497.[1][2]
Collection and locality
The typed Flora of Afghanistan label reads Prov. Badakshan: between Yawarzan and Qeshm. and Fieldside. Common in the area up to 1.8 m., with the altitude c. 1200 m and the date 5 July 1969. The collectors are printed I. Hedge, P. Wendelbo & L. Ekberg, with Ekberg's name struck through, and the number is W 9486.[3] The catalogue gives the same locality, collectors, number and date, with no habitat or altitude.[1] Yawarzan and Keshem, the label's Qeshm, are about 16 kilometres apart.
Specimen and identification
The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L. A revision slip of the Natural History Museum, Vienna, printed for Flora Iranica, redetermines the sheet in Karl Heinz Rechinger's name in 1977: subsp. indica (Lam.) Small + Cronquist.[3] The catalogue keeps Cannabis sativa L.[1] Edinburgh publishes the sheet image under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence.[3]
