Gayo Lues is a landrace cannabis growing area in the mountains of Gayo Lues Regency, Aceh, Indonesia, within the Northern Sumatra growing region. Its reported fields lie inside the protected forest of Gunung Leuser National Park, in the kecamatan of Blangkejeren, Putri Betung and Pining.[1]
Two operations found cannabis over tens of hectares here. In November 2025 the national police found 51.75 hectares across 26 sites.[1] In September 2026 the regency police estimated a further 26.5 hectares in the mountains of Pining.[2]
Geography
The fields lie in mountain forest in the Leuser uplands of southern Aceh. The 2025 sites were inside the Gunung Leuser protected forest. The police party that reached them passed six posts, crossed a suspension bridge and two rivers and climbed along ravine edges and over large rocks.[1] The 2026 plots lay in the mountains around Desa Ekan and Desa Pepelah in Pining. The police party set out from Desa Ekan and walked for about 10 hours to reach them.[2]
Cultivation
Police described the harvest route from the 2025 fields. Dried and sacked cannabis was cached in scrub beside a river and floated downstream when an order came, to couriers waiting below.[1] The 2026 operation found about 180 kilograms of dried cannabis at several places, three presses and huts that it suspected the growers had used.[2]
Enforcement
The November 2025 operation followed an arrest in North Sumatra. The narcotics crime directorate of Bareskrim Polri arrested two men carrying about 47 kilograms in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, who said their supplier was in Blangkejeren. After a two-day search the directorate's teams located the fields on 14 November 2025, counted 51.75 hectares at 26 sites and burned the crop.[1]
In September 2026 the Gayo Lues police mounted a four-day operation under Operasi Antik Seulawah 2026, led by the regency police chief. They estimated the total, from the points they found, at 26.5 hectares and about 53,000 plants, and burned the plots on site.[2]
Gayo Lues is one of the pilot regencies of the national narcotics agency's alternative-development programme for Aceh.[3]
Accessions
No accessions documented yet.
Conservation status
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility holds four preserved Indonesian Cannabis sativa specimens, none of them from Aceh.[4]
