Fu 1897 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on a field bank at Sungpan (Songpan), in Sichuan (then Szechuan), China, at 3,200 m on 21 September 1937 by K. T. Fu. Its label notes that the plant was sometimes cultivated by country people for clothing and rope. The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing holds a sheet as PE 00578007[1], and the Northwestern Institute of Botany in Yangling a second as WUK0021278[2].
Collection and locality
The field label is typed on a plain slip, without a printed heading. It gives the number 1897, the date Sept. 21, 1937, the locality Szechuan: Sungpan with 四川 松潘 added by hand, the altitude 3200 m., the habitat on field bank and the collector K.T.Fu. A printed tag gives the collector's name in full, Fu Kun-Tsun, with the number.[3] The catalogue gives the collector, the number, the year and Sichuan.[1] The Yangling sheet carries the same typed form, with 四川松潘 added by hand, and a printed tag, Coll. Fu K'un-Tsün, numbered 1897.[4]
Recorded use and habit
The label describes a herb with palmatisect, opposite leaves and achenes for fruit, and adds: This plant is sometimes cultivated by countrymen for making clothes and ropes with its bark.[3]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries one tall stem with its root and a dense female top. A slip names it Cannabis sativa Linn., determined by Y. Liu in 1954.[3] The Yangling sheet carries one tall, forked stem with its root and a leafy fruiting top.[4] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
