Evidentiary scope

The label places the plant on field bank at Sungpan in September 1937, and its note says that the plant is sometimes cultivated by countrymen for making clothes and ropes with its bark. The label gives both a place outside the crop and a note on cultivation, and does not say which the sheet's plant was. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00578007, 1,029 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field label (typed, faint; no printed heading): Field No. 1897 Sept. 21, 1937 / Loc. Szechuan: Sungpan / (四川 松潘) by hand / Altit. 3200 m. (faint) / Habitat on field bank / Habit herb / Leaf palmatisect, opposite / Fruit achene / Notes This plant is sometimes cultivated by countrymen for making clothes and ropes with its bark / Name Cannabis / Coll. K.T.Fu (faint).
  • Tag (printed): Coll. Fu Kun-Tsun / No. 1897.
  • Determination slip. Cannabis sativa Linn. / Determinavit Y. Liu 1954.
  • SZECHUAN province stamp; stamped number 421655.

The two readings agree on the number, the date, the place, the habitat and the note. Both mark the altitude's digits uncertain and read 3200; one reads the note's last words as also its bark and left the collector's initials unread, and one reads the stamped number as 421635.

  • Yangling sheet (WUK0021278), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0021278, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed form: Field No. 1897 / Sept. 21, 1937 / Loc. Szechuan: Sungpan (四川松潘, by hand) / Altit. 3200 m. / Habitat on field bank / Habit herb / Leaf palmatisect, opposite / Fruit achene / Notes This plant is sometimes cultivated by countrymen for making clothes and ropes with its bark / Coll. K.T.Fu. Printed tag: Coll. Fu K'un-Tsün / No. 1897. Determination slip on the back of a reused label: Cannabis sativa L., the signature not read. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree on the text; one leaves the altitude's second digit uncertain, and one reads ropes as roles.

Georeferencing

Sungpan is Songpan (松潘), written in characters on the label; the town is the seat of Songpan County. The point 32.66, 103.60 is the town's place node in OpenStreetMap (node 4721739285). SRTM gives 2,869 m there against the label's 3,200 m, so the field bank lay above the town, on the slopes around it. The point stands for the town and its surroundings, not the spot where the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Classification. The habitat, a field bank, points to a plant outside the crop, and the note to a crop that country people sometimes grew. The page does not choose between them, and the accession is classified Other.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's K. T. Fu; the tag's Fu Kun-Tsun is the full form. He is Fu Kun-tsun (傅坤俊), born in 1912: the Harvard botanist index gives the name and the year, and Wikidata gives 傅坤俊 with the aliases Kun-Tsun Fu and K.T.Fu. No source read gives the year of his death. The prose links Fu Kun-tsun.

Elevation. The altitude's digits are faint; both readings give 3200, and the elevation field stores 3,200 m.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Yangling sheets carry the same typed form, note on use included. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0021278 also as record be20f2f6); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.

Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 22:21, 13 October 2026 (+07)
