Forsström s.n. is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa gathered in 1798 by J. E. Forsström from a plant grown in the academic garden of Uppsala University, Sweden. The Swedish Museum of Natural History holds the sheet as S07-8837.[1][2]
The label
The museum's catalogue transcribes the label as Ups. Acad. Träg., an abbreviation for the academic garden at Uppsala, and gives the year 1798, the continent as Cult. (cultivated) and the determination as Cannabis sativa Linn.[1] Its note Herb. Casströmii places the sheet in the herbarium of Casström.[1][2]
The university's garden was changing site at the time. It had stood east of the Fyris river, on the ground of today's Linnaeus Garden, until in 1787 Gustaf III gave the gardens of Uppsala Castle to the university for a new botanical garden; the plants were moved there over the next two decades, and the move was complete by 1807.[3] The label does not say which of the two gardens the plant grew in.
Collector
Harvard's Index of Botanists gives the collector's name as Johan Erik Forsström (1775–1824) and notes collections of his from Guadeloupe, Saint Barthélemy and the West Indies, held in Stockholm.[4]
