Evidentiary scope

The sheet documents hemp grown in the university's garden at Uppsala in 1798. A plant from a botanical garden says nothing about the population its seed came from, and the label gives no origin, so the page claims none. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

The sheet has not been seen. The text is the museum's catalogue transcription, read on 11 October 2026. The catalogue lists no image, and GBIF's copy (occurrence 1096652926) carries no media.

  • Ups. Acad. Träg. is read as the Uppsala academic garden: Ups. for Uppsala, Acad. for academic, Träg. for trädgård, garden.
  • Herb. Casströmii is Latin for "Casström's herbarium".

Georeferencing

The point 59.86, 17.64 is the town of Uppsala, OpenStreetMap node 25735371, in the two-decimal form. The label names the academic garden, and in 1798 that could be either of two sites: the old garden east of the Fyris river, today the Linnaeus Garden (OpenStreetMap way 25019923), or the gardens of Uppsala Castle, given to the university in 1787 and fully planted by 1807 (way 184653916). The two lie about 1.3 km apart, and both are within about 1.2 km of the point. The point places the plant in a garden in the town; it says nothing about where its seed came from. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field keeps the catalogue's J. E. Forsström. Harvard's index gives that exact form as the label name of Johan Erik Forsström (1775–1824), and the article takes his full name and dates from it.

Country and province. Sweden, from the label's Uppsala; the catalogue gives no country. No province is entered: the label names the town and the garden, and the locality field gives the town.

Origin. None is claimed. The continent value Cult. and the garden on the label say the plant was cultivated, not where its seed came from.

Title. The catalogue gives the collection number as s.n.; the title takes it with the catalogue's year.
