Fang 12269 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected on grassy slopes at Chengtu (Chengdu), in Sichuan (then Szechuan), China, on 25 April 1938 by W. P. Fang for National Szechuan University. The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing holds three sheets, PE 00578012[1], PE 00578013[2] and PE 00761655[3].
Collection and locality
Each sheet carries the printed label of the herbarium of National Szechuan University (國立四川大學植物標本室), headed 四川植物 and Plantae Szechuanenses. Its Chinese half gives the place 成都 (Chengtu), the collector 方文培 (Fang Wen-p'ei), the number 12269 and the date 中華民國27年4月25日 (25 April in year 27 of the Republic, 1938); its typed lines add On grassy slopes, herb, 2-3m. fl. greenish.; and its Latin half gives Local. Chengtu, Legit. W. P. Fang, no. 12269 and Datum. Apr. 25 1938. On PE 00578013, 南門外 (outside the South Gate) is pencilled after 成都, and a stamped tag repeats the number, the name, the date and 四川.[4][5][6] The catalogue gives the collector, the number, the year and Sichuan.[1]
Specimen and identification
The three sheets carry male flowering branches. The label names the plant Cannabis sativa Linnaeus; later slips on PE 00578013 and PE 00761655 name it Cannabilis sativa L. and Cannabis sativa Linn., the second determined by Cao Ziyu in January 2004.[4][5][6] Fang had gathered cannabis at Kangting ten years earlier: Fang 3525 (1928).
