EBC 91993 is an accession of hemp fibre, Cannabis sativa, from near Duyun, in Guizhou, China. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew holds it in its Economic Botany Collection as EBC 91993.[1] J. Balfour-Paul collected it and gave it to Kew, where it was entered in 2012.
The catalogue entry
The catalogue gives the artefact name and the parts held as Hemp fibres, the plant name as 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa, the country as China, the storage as Bottles, boxes etc, the entry book number as 1.2012, and both the donor and the collector as Balfour-Paul J. The catalogue leaves the geography description, use, donor number, collector's number and collection date blank.[1] Kew's help page defines the collector as the person who first obtained a specimen and the entry book number as a number given to each group of specimens at acquisition, in a series that runs each year.[2]
Kew's entry on GBIF adds a remark that its own catalogue page does not show: Hemp from nr. Duyun. Used for soles of shoes, sometimes mixed with cotton for warp threads. No longer used for whole cloth.[3] It is the only place the entry gives. Kew's photograph of the fibre's box shows a label reading Origin: China.[3]
The same donor and entry number are recorded for a sample of hemp muslin from China, catalogued as an artefact, Textile (Kew EBC 91920).[4]
Specimen and identification
Kew files the fibre as Cannabis sativa.[1] Its photographs show a loose skein of long, pale golden-brown fibres.[3]
