Damaren jiu (大麻仁酒, dàmárén jiǔ, "cannabis seed wine") is a remedy of Chinese medicine in which roasted and powdered cannabis seed is ground into wine and boiled down. It was taken for "bone-marrow wind toxin" (骨髓風毒) with pain that prevents movement. The Tujing bencao of 1070 quoted it from an earlier book, the Qiezhong fang (篋中方, "Formulas Within a Small Box"), and later texts repeated it under the seed of cannabis.[1]
Making damaren jiu
The Zhenglei bencao (1108) gives the Qiezhong fang recipe in full. One large sheng of the seed that sinks when soaked in water is drained, dried in the sun and stir-fried slowly in a silver vessel until fragrant. Two people in turn pound it in a wooden mortar until it is as fine as white flour, and it is divided into ten doses. Each dose is ground with a large bowl of home-brewed wine "without lime" (無灰酒) in an earthenware basin with a willow pestle, and the husks are strained off. The wine is boiled down by half and drunk warm at one draught on an empty stomach, one dose a day. The recipe promises results after four or five doses in mild cases, and in severe ones relief within ten.[2] Li Shizhen gave the same recipe under its name in the Bencao gangmu (1593).[3][1]
E. Joseph Brand and Zhao Zhongzhen note that the wine differs from the other seed preparations of Chinese medicine in being given for severe pain. They suggest that if the seeds kept their bracts, broken resin glands would sink with them, stir-frying would turn THC acids into THC and the wine would extract it, and they call this explanation "purely speculative" without confirming evidence.[1]
