Cowan s.n., Algarah is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa from Algarah, credited to J. M. Cowan and dated 4 August 1923. Its field slip gives the name Ganga, written गानजा in Devanagari. The slip says that the plant was brought from the forest.[1] Algarah lies in present-day Kalimpong district, West Bengal, India. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds the sheet as catalogue E00248814.[2] GBIF publishes it as occurrence 575039422.[3]
Collection and locality
The sheet carries a printed label of the Herb. Hort. Bot. Calcuttensis for the Flora of Darjeeling, with the collector printed as Coll. J. M. Cowan. Its number, name, locality and altitude lines are blank. Its date line carries the printed century 19.[1] A handwritten field slip reads From Algarah and gives the date as 4/8/23.[1]
The RBGE catalogue and GBIF give the date as 4 August 1893.[2][3]
Field observations
The slip opens with the name Ganga, followed by गानजा in Devanagari. Its notes read On the dry land, 7 Feets high (about 2.1 m) and It is a plant Brought from Forest.[1]
Specimen and identification
A printed slip reads Determinavit:- K. Biswas, with Cannabis sativa Linn. pencilled above it.[1] The sheet is stamped Imperial Forestry Institute with the number 28734. Its printed label is overstamped From the Herbarium, Imperial Forestry Institute, University of Oxford.[1] The catalogue records the specimen as Cannabis sativa L., collected by John Macqueen Cowan.[2]
