Chu 3393 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected in Pao Hsing hsien (Baoxing County), in Sichuan, China, at 2,400 m, on 3 August 1936 by K. L. Chu for the herbarium of National Szechuan University. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh holds a sheet as E01459310,[1] and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris a duplicate as P06884288,[2] the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing a third as PE 00578030,[3] and the Northwestern Institute of Botany in Yangling two more, WUK0317708[4] and WUK0329338.[5]
Collection and locality
The Chinese label of the herbarium of National Szechuan University (國立四川大學植物標本室, Szechuan plants) gives the place as 寶興縣, Baoxing County, followed by a village name; the collector as 曲桂齡, number 3393; and the date as the 3rd day of the 8th month of the 25th year of the Republic, 1936. A second label in Latin, Plantae Szechuanense, reads Local. Pao Hsing-hsien, alt. 2400 m. Legit. K. L. Chu, no. 3393. Datum Aug. 3. 1936.[6]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries a leafy stem with palmate leaves of narrow leaflets and a slender flowering spike.[6] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa Linnaeus; the catalogue records Cannabis sativa L.[6][1]
The Paris duplicate carries the same two labels, with the place, the collector, the number 3393, the altitude of 2,400 m and the date, 3 August 1936. A museum label dates its receipt in Paris to 23 August 1939. The sheet carries a leafy stem with palmate leaves and a flowering top.[7]
The Beijing and Yangling sheets carry a printed tag of the West China Academy of Science (中國西部科學院), 川康植物廿五年採集 (plants of Sichuan and Xikang, collected in the 25th year of the Republic, 1936), numbered 3393 by hand.[8][9][10] The two Yangling sheets also carry a later typed form of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Northwest Institute of Biology and Soil, which gives the collector as K. L. Chiu, the number 3393, the year 1936 and the place Szichuan: Pao-sing-hsien. One carries a branched leafy female top, the other a slender stem with a male inflorescence. The Beijing sheet carries a male flowering top with palmate leaves of narrow, serrate leaflets, and a slip naming it Cannabis sativa L., determined by W. K. Hsia in 1939. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
