Evidentiary scope
The labels place a cannabis plant in Baoxing County at 2,400 m in August 1936. They give no habitat, use, variety or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high), in two independent readings.
- Chinese label (printed, completed by hand): 國立四川大學植物標本室 / 四川植物 / 產地 寶興縣 趕[?]羊村 / 採集人 曲桂齡 號數 3393 / 時期 中華民國 25 年 8 月 3 日 / Cannabis sativa Linnaeus.
- Latin label. PLANTAE SZECHUANENSE / Local. PAO HSING-HSIEN alt. 2400 m. / Legit. K.L.Chu no. 3393 / Datum Aug. 3. 1936.
- Village. Both readings give 趕羊村, with the first character uncertain in both. The village is not named in the article.
- Paris duplicate (P06884288), read from GBIF's cached copy of the holder's image (2,000 pixels wide). The same Chinese label (國立四川大學植物標本室 / 四川植物 / 產地 寶興縣 … / 採集人 曲桂齡 / 號數 3393 / 時期 中華民國 25年8月3日) and Latin label (PLANTAE SZECHUANENSE / Local. PAO HSING-HSIEN alt. 2400 m. / Legit. K.L. Chu no. 3393 / Datum Aug. 3, 1936), determined Cannabis sativa Linnaeus. Museum label: HERB. MUS. PARIS.; Reçu le 23 Août 1939. The village name was not read on this sheet.
- Yangling sheets (WUK0317708, WUK0329338), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's images (WUK0317708, 990 × 1,440 pixels; WUK0329338, 990 × 1,440 pixels). On both, a typed form (中国科学院 / 西北生物土壤研究所 / 植物标本室): 采集者 K. L. Chiu / 号数 3393 / 采集日期 1936 年 (month and day blank) / 产地 Szichuan: Pao-sing-hsien; a printed tag, 中國西部科學院川康植物廿五年採集, numbered 3393; a determination slip, 中国科学院西北植物研究所植物标本室 / Cannabis sativa L. / 鉴定人 胡志新 1982.4. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree on the forms; one left the tag's printed line mostly unread on both sheets.
- Beijing sheet (PE 00578030), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (PE 00578030, 1,020 × 1,440 pixels). Printed tag: 中國西部科學院川康植物廿五年採集 / 第 3393 號 (pencil). Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit W. K. Hsia 1939. SZECHUAN province stamp; Fan Memorial Institute of Biology stamp; red 63676. No collector's name and no place appear on the sheet.
Georeferencing
The point 30.56, 102.71 is the middle of Baoxing County's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 2789723, about 3,115 km²), checked to fall inside it. The village on the Chinese label was not found. Baoxing County's seat lies at 781 m (OpenStreetMap's point) to 1,022 m (Wikidata's point, Q807084) by SRTM, far below the labels' 2,400 m, so the plant was taken in the county's mountains, not at its seat. It is an area point for the county, not the place the plant was gathered. The province field takes Sichuan. An earlier version of this note gave no point because the county seat cannot stand for the site. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 32 km.
Editorial treatment
Date. The 25th year of the Republic of China is 1936, which matches the Latin label's Aug. 3. 1936.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's K. L. Chu. The Harvard botanist index gives him as Chu Kuei-ling (曲桂齡, Qu Guiling, 1905–1990), a plant ecologist who collected in Jiangsu from 1926 to 1931 and in Sikang in 1936; the Chinese name on the label matches. The prose links Chu Kuei-ling.
Paris duplicate. The Paris sheet, P06884288, carries the same labels as the Edinburgh sheet and came to Paris in 1939. It is one gathering with the Edinburgh sheet, cited in the article and shown in its gallery (CC BY 4.0).
Five sheets, one accession. The Edinburgh and Paris sheets carry the National Szechuan University labels: K. L. Chu, number 3393, Pao Hsing-hsien, 3 August 1936. The Beijing and Yangling sheets carry the West China Academy of Science tag with the same number and year, and the Yangling forms, written after 1949, transcribe the gathering as K. L. Chiu, 3393, 1936, Pao-sing-hsien: the same collector, number, year and county, in another spelling. The tag alone, on the Beijing sheet, would not tie that sheet to the gathering; the Yangling forms do. Why one gathering carries the labels of two institutions is not stated on any sheet or in any source read. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the labels.
- The Paris catalogue dates the gathering to 8 August 1936; both labels on the Paris sheet read 3 August (Aug. 3, 8月3日).
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the Beijing sheet's collector as 西部科学院, the West China Academy of Science, an institution; the Yangling forms give K. L. Chiu, and the Edinburgh and Paris labels K. L. Chu.
- The Yangling forms and the tag give only the year 1936; the Edinburgh and Paris labels give 3 August 1936.
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists each Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0317708 also as record be2144ac; WUK0329338 also as record be213a42); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.
