Chatterjee s.n. is an accession record for a February 1902 herbarium gathering of Cannabis sativa made by A. C. Chatterjee at Dhuhi in Assam, India. Duplicate sheets are held by the Herbarium of the University of Zurich, the Bell Museum and the California Botanic Garden; Meise Botanic Garden catalogues another Chatterjee sheet from 1902 under a conflicting locality and month.[1][2][3][4]
Collection and locality
The printed label is headed Herb. Hort. Bot. Calcuttensis and Flora of Assam. Its handwritten fields give the name Cannabis sativa, the locality Dhuhi and the date February 1902; A. C. Chatterjee is printed as collector.[5] No collector number, altitude or field observation is entered on the label.[5]
Specimen and identification
The Zurich sheet is catalogued as Z-000164587 and published as GBIF occurrence 2575494190.[1] Other duplicates are Bell Museum catalogue 227179, California Botanic Garden catalogue RSA0126604 and Meise Botanic Garden catalogue BR0000023200364.[2][3][4] All four occurrence records publish the specimens as Cannabis sativa L.[1][2][3][4]
Two more sheets are catalogued under Chatterjee in Assam in 1902, with no place below the province: the Manchester Museum's K22722, dated February 1902,[6] and the Smithsonian's US 516739, dated March 1902.[7] The Harvard University Herbaria hold two more under Chatterjee's name with the locality Assam: barcode 00449850 in the herbarium of the Arnold Arboretum, dated 1902,[8] and barcode 00449851 in the Gray Herbarium, dated March 1902.[9] Ernest Small determined both in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica.[8][9]
Sequenced duplicate
Leaflets from the California Botanic Garden duplicate, RSA0126604, were sampled for DNA by a herbarium-genomics project coordinated by Christopher J. Grassa of Harvard University, and the sample was sequenced by Marco Todesco at the University of British Columbia. The garden's catalogue entry for the sheet notes Leaf tissue removed for DNA.[10] The sample is BioSample SAMEA112688685, public in the European Nucleotide Archive since 24 February 2025. Its voucher is RSA:POM:166279 and its tissue Leaflets removed from original specimen voucher.[11]
The sample belongs to the archive's project DNA sequencing of Cannabis specimens accessioned in herbarium RSA, one of a set organised under an umbrella project called Population Dynamics in Cannabaceae.[12] Two whole-genome sequencing runs from it, made on an Illumina NovaSeq 6000, were released on 20 April 2025.[13][14] The sample is the California Botanic Garden sheet's, not the Zurich sheet's.
