Bortala is a cannabis growing area in the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang, China, on the frontier with Kazakhstan. It is part of the Northern Xinjiang growing region. Cannabis grows wild there. The prefecture's border force said in 2016 that the climate of the Bortala border area suits wild cannabis, and that it organises a clearance every summer and autumn; that year it had cleared 108,000 plants by late June.[1] In 2025 the police of Bole, the prefecture's capital, found about 210,000 wild plants on one patrol.[2]
Wild stands and clearances
From the middle of June 2016 the border force of the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture cleared wild stands across its district, 108,000 plants by 24 June.[1] On 24 June 2016 the public security bureau of the Bole reclamation area of the Fifth Division of the Production and Construction Corps cleared more than 100,000 wild plants.[3]
On 4 June 2025 the police of the Bole reclamation area and the Haerdun border police station found a large stand in the woodland of a company of the 87th Regiment, which they confirmed as wild cannabis. With the company's residents they cleared more than 19,000 plants and searched the ground round about for seedlings.[4] A report of September 2025 said that police officers of Bole on a line patrol had found about 210,000 wild plants, which several departments cleared together; no one held the land where they grew under contract or lease.[2]
Herbarium specimens
A. Regel collected a sheet on the lower Bortala (Untere Borotala) in August 1878, Regel s.n., Bortala (1878), now in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris.[5] T. N. Liou collected Liou 3403 (1931) on river flats near a gorge at 1,600 m on 18 August 1931; the Yangling duplicate names the plant as wild,[6] and the catalogue of the Beijing sheet places it in Bole.[7]
